Our Projects

We are not just growing kelp

We are using seaweed to build green industries and shape a sustainable future

Getting Seaweed into our Diets

Food production is thought to contribute as much as 30% of global carbon emissions. So to feed a growing global population on a warming planet we need to think differently about food.

Seaweed is a delicious super food and also one of the most sustainable sources of calories on earth. It needs no land, no fresh water, no fertiliser and no pesticides.

So Ocean Origin is working on a number of exciting ways to get more seaweed into our diets. Watch out as we take the fight against climate change to our dinner plates!

Creating the Materials of the Future

Extractive industries, manufacture, pharmaceuticals, and the energy sector, all rely heavily on fossil fuels, and so pose a grave threat to our environment. While disposable plastics and micro-plastics are overwhelming our oceans and rivers. We must find a better way!

We believe that seaweed is the raw material of the future, and a nature-based solution to address many of the climate crisis’s most challenging problems. It is a rapidly renewable resource which sequesters carbon and nurtures marine ecosystems. It can be turned into carbon-negative, compostable bioplastics, fibres, and other advanced materials to transform polluting industries.

It can be used in high-capacity energy storage systems and so be used to support a transition to renewable energy. It also has natural anti-microbial properties so has great potential in the medical and pharmaceutical sectors.

Ocean Origin is working with our academic partners to turn seaweed into the sustainable materials we need to power the green revolution.

Advancing Sustainable Agriculture

Our soil contains more carbon than our atmosphere and all earths vegetation combined - we would like to keep it that way!

Depleted soils release carbon into the air and cannot be used to produce food. Farms use imported chemicals to maintain yields as our soil health declines.

Healthy soils produce healthy plants, which don’t need pesticides or fertilisers. They lock-in carbon, support healthy livestock, and retain water to prevent floods. In the UK, seaweed has been used as a natural fertiliser for nearly 1000 years. It can also be fed as a dietary supplement to cows and sheep instead of soya, which is often grown by clearing rainforest.

Ocean Origin is looking to develop agricultural products that support local farmers transition to sustainable farming practices and promote healthy soils. This will help to protect our farmers and the environment.
